Fundraising Events-

The monthly breakfasts have been a huge success and many people are anticipating the next one as they’re enjoying the present one.  The dates for the remainder of the breakfasts this year are as follows:  October 26th and Nov. 23rd .  Please join us for camaraderie, a good meal, and a way to help us raise funds.  The cost of each of these breakfasts is $5.00!  Children under the age of 12 are free!

Kudos to Ann Narcoonis and Matushka Kathy for organizing a wonderful Flea Market event.  Many people volunteered to help, and the food was a super addition to the festivities of the day.  Thanks to Fr. Gabe and his crew, who in their usually outstanding manner, prepared and served all the delicacies.  This helped us raise over $1500.00 for the Centennial Fund!  Way to go, gang!  Thanks to everyone  who donated or purchased items, or bought food, too!

Centennial Quilt Raffle – Joan Emswiler, a Blakeslee neighbor and friend of Diana Brotschul, made and donated a beautiful commemorative “Card Tricks pattern” quilt to be raffled off, with the proceeds going to St. Michael’s Centennial Fund.  The quilt measures 55” x 82” and can be seen in the church basement.  Many members of the Centennial Committee have raffle tickets.  The quilt will be raffled off on January 4, 2009.  Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.

Happenings –

On October 19th the Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir, superbly directed by Aleksei V. Shipovalnikov, presented an exhilarating, spiritually uplifting concert in commemoration of St. Michael’s 100th Anniversary.  The concert was enthusiastically received by all who attended, filling the church to capacity.  A culinary delight prepared by Fr. Gabe & his crew followed at St. Michael’s Center.  Merci beaucoup (thanks so much) to everyone.  To see some great photos of the concert, go to our website: stmichaeljermyn.org and click the “Centennial News” and “Pictures from the Spirit of Orthodoxy Concert” buttons.

We are preparing for the trip on November 29th to see the “Miracle of Christmas”.  The bus will be at St. Michael’s Center at 7:30 A.M. It will depart by 8:00 AM, with a stop in Blakeslee to pick up a group of people and will then arrive at the Hershey Family Restaurant  (around 11:00 AM), where lunch will be on your own.  Diana will have some menus to look through before we arrive.  After lunch, you’ll be needed back on the bus at 12:15 P.M.  Tickets will NOT be handed out, but Diana will show you where the group is sitting and you can find a seat in that section.  The show will begin promptly at 1:00 PM.  It lasts about two and a half hours.  Afterwards, we’ll be having dinner at the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant (included).  The theatre is totally sold out, but you can still get your name placed on a waiting list for cancellations by contacting either Kay or Diana.

St. Michael Orthodox Church is part of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania, which is presided over by The Most Reverend Mark (Maymon), Archbishop of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania. More Information >

The Holy Scripture is a collection of books written over multiple centuries by those inspired by God to do so. It is the primary witness to the Orthodox Christian faith, within Holy Tradition and often described as its highest point. It was written by the prophets and apostles in human language, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and collected, edited, and canonized by the Church.

Daily Readings >

Holiness or sainthood is a gift (charisma) given by God to man, through the Holy Spirit. Man's effort to become a participant in the life of divine holiness is indispensable, but sanctification itself is the work of the Holy Trinity, especially through the sanctifying power of Jesus Christ, who was incarnate, suffered crucifixion, and rose from the dead, in order to lead us to the life of holiness, through the communion with the Holy Spirit.
